Look of the Day: Military Rank
fashionspace
On 17 July 1909, English fashion designer Sir Edwin Hardy Amies was born. In 1950, Amies made several outfits for Princess Elizabeth for her royal tour in Canada. Five years later, he was awarded the Royal Warrant of official dressmaker to Elizabeth, who would become Queen.
However, Amies came to commercial success when he established his couture house on the illustrious Savile Row. Deprived of couture during the war, customers flocked to Amies for his beautifully tailored clothes.
In 1961, Amies made history when he staged the first men's ready-to-wear runway show at the Savoy Hotel in London. His regular column for Esquire magazine led to the 1964 book ABC of Men's Fashion, still the go-to guide for the intimate details of the well-dressed man.
On Amies' birthday, we look to Hard Amies, Amies' recently revived fashion house, and the military take at their Paris debut for SS12.
