Brand info

Choo Yilin is a multiple international award-winning jewellery brand that seeks to fuse sustainability and luxury. The label has been featured regularly in local and international press, including the UK’s Financial Times’ How To Spend It.

Work first started with the Karen hill tribe artisans in northern Thailand, drawing awareness and bringing support to a centuries-old culture which might otherwise be in danger of dying out. In this way, the label sheds light on the effects modernity has on indigenous cultures like the Karen.

The company has since expanded its sustainability outreach, not only by using reclaimed metals but also by researching and developing other methods to “green” the supply chain. In addition, its partners include non-profit groups such as the World Wildlife Fund, with their issues of forest and marine conservation communicated through the company’s jewellery design.

Contrary to the high-polish and symmetry that has dictated high-end jewellery for so long, Choo Yilin has a preference for included gemstones and textured metals. With designs that are always organic and asymmetrical, the underlying philosophy is about applauding life in all its imperfect beauty.

The Designers

Choo Yilin

Yilin Choo's initial inspirations were formed from her extensive traveling in Europe and Asia as well as the organic complexities of life. Starting over in a new place in Bangkok, Thailand in 2007, she immersed herself in working on developmental aid projects with traditionally marginalised groups. Through this work, she was introduced to the Karen hilltribe artisans and was deeply inspired by their rich cultural heritage of silversmithing. She launched the label's first ready-to-wear collection with them. Since then, she's expanded the label's sustainable outreach to collaborations with non-profit groups to use their conservation campaigns as inspirations for the label's ready-to-wear series.

Kevin Ong

Kevin Ong has been formally trained in art and design since he was seven, willingly hot-housed by his mentors and parents. He has almost 20 years of immersion in the creative field across various mediums that include sculpture, paper and the digital realm; mediums which have helped provide a more nuanced and textured perspective to his role as a jewellery designer. By some unknown quirk, he's possibly the world's most angst-free artist, much to his colleagues' amusement and gratitude. Always seeking to communicate through design, he has embraced jewellery as a modern artform to convey important messages to his audience.

Sustainable luxury jeweller Choo Yilin today launched her new jade collection in a continuation of her label’s mission to make the traditional cultural icon more accessible. The collection is made from bronze, silver and gold as well as natural gemstones.
Said founder and designer Choo Yilin, “The response to our inaugural jade collection was
phenomenal. We wanted to continue the jade theme for 2011 and thus responded with pushing the design envelope further – this time with leafy vined themes in line with the United Nation’s International Year of Forests.”
The collection features hand-cut grade A jadeite, woven with bronze, sterling silver and 18KT gold vermeil with well-faceted, natural gemstones. The combination of textured precious metal and luminous gemstones was intended to be in strong contrast to the green opaqueness of jade. In the label’s signature style, the precious metals are strongly textured to convey its organic aesthetic.
Choo Yilin is introducing this range, between 180 sgd for a ring to 590 sgd for a pair of
statement earrings.

Flower Jade Collection

This collection is an homage to coral reefs and its importance to the ecology of earth, is made entirely of 99.9% reclaimed sterling silver and vermeil as well as natural gemstones. Together with non-profit group, Too Precious To Wear, the jeweller aims to educate the public on the importance of the preservation of coral reefs and the avoidance of purchasing jewellery made of real coral.
With her participation in Too Precious To Wear (TPTW), Choo joins the ranks of jewellers who have committed themselves to the protection of coral, including Tiffany’s Paloma Picasso and Frank Gehry. She is the first Asian jeweller to sign the TPTW pledge to stop using coral in fine jewellery. Said Choo, “Instead of using real coral that has been used traditionally in fine jewellery, we created jewellery pieces heavily inspired by coral reefs around the world, embellished with precious gemstones. It was our hope that with this collection – perfectly in line with the label’s design aesthetic of organic asymmetry and old-world glamour – we would be able to help raise awareness of the need to preserve coral reefs; one of the easiest ways to do that was simply to avoid purchasing real coral pieces. This tribute to coral would also hopefully demonstrate that it was possible to appreciate the indisputable beauty of coral without having to wear real coral.”
The jewellery pieces are based on actual coral species with the designer taking the liberty to add her signature asymmetrical touch by weaving randomly placed gemstones in the items. “Coral by nature is extremely organic in its structure so it was a perfect, natural fit with the label’s design philosophy,” added Choo. Separately, in a continuation of the label’s aim to minimise ecological damage, the entire collection is made up of 99.9% reclaimed sterling silver, with some pieces being gilded in 18KT gold and black rhodium.

Classic Bezel Collection

This collection was an homage to the oldest way of gemstone setting – the bezel. The designs of this range is incredibly simple – no embellishments of small sapphire accents, no complicated swirls or tiny pave stones. Instead, there is only one focus – on the bezel-set gemstone. The bezel isn’t a traditionally plain one though; we jazzed it up with the label’s signature organic look, whereby the overall look keeps in line with the label’s asymmetrical and organic aesthetic.
This range also features open-ended, free-sized rings and bangles, cognisant of individual differences in sizes and ensuring that everyone finds pieces that are well-fit. Organic gemstones – lemon quartzes, prasiolites, rose de frances, amethysts, rock crystals and whiskey quartzes - are used, all flawless with high brilliance in order to be juxtaposed against the rough, organic aesthetic of the bezel. The necklaces come in different lengths which allows the wearer to layer them on and the earrings slip in and out of detachable milgrain hooks, giving the owner flexibility of creating different looks.
Also in line with the jewellery label’s vision is this range’s commitment to the overall sustainability principles. Moving from 50% to 99.9% reclaimed silver, this range marks a significant landmark in its eco-sustainability movement. Added Choo, “We have been negotiating with the refining and casting company for a long time to move toward reclaimed silver as much as possible. Until now, because of logistical issues, we had only managed to secure a reclaimed silver content that was 50%. However, after much negotiating, we are really excited to have managed to purchase and work with silver that has been entirely reclaimed and not mined.”
