Street Style: Minty Fresh

On the streets of Taiwan, La Mode Outré photographer James spotted Alex in an earthy mix of browns, greens and blues.

Black might go with everything, but brown and grey make for softer complements to this season’s pales – especially for a day-time look. Add a bit of depth with dark or patterned accessories to finish the look.

Street Style: Pants On Floral

With superstar designers like Phoebe Philo and Stella McCartney embracing full floral suits, top-to-toe florals has been identified as one of the leading trends of Spring/Summer 2012. However, it is definitely not the easiest look for mere mortals (i.e. non-models) to carry off. If you want to stay on-trend without coming across as a fashion victim, lose the floral top but keep those bold blooming trousers. Match the loudness of these pants with a fresh, simple and classy top. Contrast the femininity of the florals with punk-inspired studded accessories and a sleek city bag to be slung nonchalantly on the shoulder. Pull on some gams-lengthening booties to complete this stylish urban outfit.

Street Style: Hat Trick

Now, here’s an interesting question: why do men no longer wear hats? They are charming, smart and dashing – definitely a cool accessory to be donning. What was once a gentleman’s wardrobe staple is now almost extinct on the streets. However, if you want to spot one, the menswear shows in Milan will be the best bet. Streetstyle photographer Tommy Ton of Jack & Jil snapped this debonair good-looker when he is in the midst of his morning paper. Cutting an elegant figure in a neat printed shirt underneath a pressed navy blazer, it was his wide-brimmed, powder blue felt hat that stole the show for me. Not quite flamboyant but certainly eye-catching, you got to love a man is not afraid to stand out a little.

Street Style: Vested Interest

I have wanted a fur vest for the longest time. It is a silly thing for a girl living in Singapore to covet, but love is blind and I continue to lust after the inimitable sense of glamour that it exudes. I have since decided that there is no reason why I cannot buy one of these lovely things and save them for a cold autumn day somewhere far away. My perfect fur vest will be fluffy, soft and preferably faux. To wear a standout statement piece like this, it will be wise to tone down on the rest of your outfit and keep it fuss-free and classic. A silk shirt and wide-legged pants combination or a simple maxi-dress will do very nicely. The preppy Alexa satchel will add a certain youthfulness to the ensemble but go luxe with a slinky snake print. Spritz on a sensual fragrance, like Gucci’s Flora, and that’s all.

Street Style: Tough Love

The leather mini-skirt may come across as a tad dated but a full, flared knee-length one brings to mind an amusing picture of a not-so-secretly rebellious Stepford wife circa 1955, which is also surprisingly modern. And if fashion isn’t about smudging boundaries and creating interesting (often contradictory) images, I don’t know what it is. Up the volume with pleat details and wear yours with a simple knit sweater for a laid-back, effortlessly stylish vibe. You can afford to go a little dramatic with the shoes but keep it classy with a pair of over-sized shades.

Street Style: Maximum Impact

The sexy and feminine maxi-skirt is designed to bring out that womanly hour-glass figure. Let yours end just above the ankles and pair it not with your usual pair of pumps, but with menswear-inspired loafers. A long full skirt may strike you as being too dressy for day, so tone it down with a cool distressed denim jacket for a bohemian city look. Accessorise sparingly but extravagantly with a pair of colourful dangling ear-rings or over-sized cocktail ring.
