Muse(s) of The Week: Sarah and Jo from Wottoncool

Meet Jo and Sarah, the dynamic duo of Wottoncool.com. Wottoncool was born in 2008 when the girls wanted a creative outlet to express themselves and to start something that will see them staging their own fashion show in a few years’ time. We had a short chat with the both of them on their thoughts on the Singapore Blogging Scene and what is a clothing item they can never live without.

1. Can you tell us more about your background and what inspired you girls to start fashion blogging?

We were classmates for 8 years (Primary 5 through to Junior College), studying art for most of that duration. After which we both went to Business school and wanted a creative outlet to be ourselves, have fun and not take ourselves too seriously. After bouncing a few ideas and emails back and forth, Wottoncool was born.

2. As Wottoncool is helmed by 2 girls, how do you girls divide up the blogging workload?

We write about what we love, find interesting and stumble across. When either of us is busy, the other will cover. There’s no formal “division of labour”.

3. What are your thoughts on the blogging scene in Singapore and what do you think can be improved?

Since we started nearly 4 years ago, the blogging scene has changed. When we started writing about fashion, we had to purchase our own tickets for Fashion Week. With the success of overseas blogs such as Style Bubble, Style Salvage, Facehunter, The Satorialist, Bryanboy, Fashion Toast and LibertyLondonGirl (to name a few), blogging has taken on a more glamourous connotation. (I think we’re also guilty of recounting our experiences with more flare and spin sometimes :D )

4. Do you think blog will overtake traditional media?

Blogs are different from traditional media as they offer the writer’s individual opinion on fashion trends and personal style. Traditional media plays a much larger role in determining key trends each season. That being said, we think traditional media will adopt some non-traditional forms of communication. Already we see traditional media moving onto the digital platform as well.

5. Tell us more about you girls’ personal style!

Sarah prefers sportswear, clean lines and tailored cuts. She also prefers cool and earthy colours like blue, green, grey, brown and black.
Jo loves accessories and she’s also a lot more daring with her styling choices.

6. Who are some of the bloggers you girls look up to?

Susie Bubble from Style Bubble and Diana Rikasari from http://dianarikasari.blogspot.com/, they both have such bold personal style.

7. With various press features, what are your most memorable experiences since the start of your blogging adventure?
Key events would include Live blogging from the Burberry store at Ion Orchard in 2009, we met Christopher Bailey and photobooth-ed with Liu Wen. Attending the Louis Vuitton Island Maison Afterparty last year, we got to watch Estelle perform LIVE.
But more importantly we are very thankful for the wonderful people we’ve met who have since become our friends.

8. What is a clothing item you girls can never live without?Sarah: A Blazer. It makes a plain tank top + jeans combo look sharper.

Jo: Jeans, because when I’m out of things to wear, I always wear that.

9. Who are your favorite designers?

Abyzz by Desmond Yang, Mae Pang, Sundays, Nicholas, Marilyn Tan, Ling Wu, Jose Duran, Timo Weiland, Stella McCartney, Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang

10. Lastly, do you girls have any advice to aspiring fashion bloggers?
Write about what you love and have fun.

Street Style: Minty Fresh

On the streets of Taiwan, La Mode Outré photographer James spotted Alex in an earthy mix of browns, greens and blues.

Black might go with everything, but brown and grey make for softer complements to this season’s pales – especially for a day-time look. Add a bit of depth with dark or patterned accessories to finish the look.

La Mode Outré is an Asian street style site that is run solely by James Bent, a British Photographer living and travelling across Asia.
